: . Look Away!:
A brief history of Dixie -- anthem of the Confederacy and one of Abraham Lincoln's favorite tunes. The report is part of NPR's Present at the Creation series which explores the contested origins and shifting political and social meanings of American cultural icons. Several versions of the song, including one by Elvis Presley, can be heard from the Present at the Creation site. Unfortunately, you'll have to look elsewhere for what is perhaps the most moving contemporary revision of Dixie, only a snippet of which can be heard from the NPR report -- African American jazz singer Rene Marie's rendition which she sings in a medley with the anti-lynching song Strange Fruit.
