: . The Lure of the Exotic:
My friend L. recently spent a few days in Karachi to attend a friend's wedding. These are the pictures she took. She ventured forth into a Third World nation poised for war and mired in bad publicity mostly out of a sense of commitment (she prides herself for being a loyal friend) but also because of my own prodding. 'Just think of all the dinner conversations you'll be having if you get out of there alive' I half-jokingly told her while her other friends urged her not to go. This only a few days after the bombing of the US consulate in Karachi -- no American casualties, of course: 'all of the dead were Pakistani.' Seriously however: after everything that has happened maybe we should forever give up our quaint delusions regarding the safety of staying put.
