: . Sense and Sentimentality:
As promised: (not quite) a decade's worth of New York Times Op-Ed pieces by Stanley Fish. The compilation begins with Fish's thoughts on the Sokal Hoax (1996) and ends with Fish's call for "relativism" (2001) as an alternative to the easy comforts and hidden dangers of moral and intellectual absolutes. I have also thrown in a 1999 essay by Edward Said on the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
For background music why not listen to a sampling of hits from the Rodgers and Hart songbook? Two favorites, both sung by Ella Fitzgerald:
I heard both songs a few days ago at a wedding I attended and I've been in a sentimental mood ever since.
